FHS – For Researchers

Welcome, Researchers

The Framingham Heart Study welcomes the interest and proposals of outside investigators. Collaboration is encouraged as it helps to maximize the scientific value of the wealth of epidemiologic data made possible by the participation of more than 15,000 individuals who enrolled in the Framingham Heart Study over the past decades. The core research of the study has focused on many aspects of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. Access to the data for a wide range of investigations has enabled research discoveries related to other diseases such as stroke, osteoporosis, arthritis, obesity, eye and hearing disorders, and cancer.

In order to facilitate access and ensure the optimal scientific outcome, the Framingham Heart Study requests Ancillary Studies’ Principal Investigators complete the following:

STEP 0Subscribe to your FHS Researchers Listserv here.

STEP 1Review available data from internal and external repositories

STEP 1a: Consider also reviewing video and slide presentations from the 2021 FHS ESI workshop that serve as an introduction to FHS

STEP 2Review guidance for Submitting a Proposal and Ancillary Studies Policies and Procedures

STEP 3: Submit a proposal for their FHS research project via the web-based FHS Research Application; and receive the following outcome:

  • For projects that seek sponsorship, PIs must receive “Approval” from the FHS Executive Committee BEFORE investigators may submit to a sponsor for funding. Those PIs holding applications with “Approval in Concept” must report to the FHS EC that they have fulfilled their “Approval in Concept” stipulations prior to beginning their research.
  • For projects that do not seek sponsorship, PIs must receive approval from the FHS Research Committee.

STEP 4: Notify FHS (fhs@bu.edu) if you receive funding for your FHS-related research

STEP 5: Initiate Data Request via the web-based FHS Research Application to indicate your research team is prepared to receive FHS data for your previously approved project.
